Youth Culinary Open House
Curious about Life Plus Youth Programs? Come see it for yourself. Our Youth Culinary Open House is a free, hands-on introduction for families interested in everything we offer for young learners — from our weekly Youth Culinary Passport to our Summer Camps. Step into our teaching kitchen, meet our team, and experience how Life Plus uses food as a gateway to history, culture, science, geography, music, and creativity. This is not a demo. This is an experience. What to Expect Kids will prepare a full meal from start to finish— this is not a sample or a quick activity This is a full 3-hour session, and kids should plan to stay for the entire experience Students are fully hands-on and actively involved every step of the way Parents are welcome to drop off so kids can fully immerse themselves If you prefer to stay, you’re welcome to relax in our café or in the front of our suite at the Sherman Oaks Galleria Meet our instructors and experience how we teach through culture, storytelling, and global cuisine Open Q&A for parents covering both Youth Culinary Passport and Summer Camps Why Attend? April Youth Culinary Passport – Japan (Ages 9–12)
Program Dates April Thursdays 3:30 PM - 6:30 PM April 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th Give your child the chance to explore the world through food in this immersive, month-long youth culinary experience. Youth Culinary Passport – Japan is a four-week series designed for curious 9–12-year-olds who want to build real kitchen skills while discovering global culture. Each week, students explore Japanese cuisine as a gateway to understanding geography, regional traditions, ingredients, and culinary history. From the seafood-rich coasts to mountainous countryside regions, students learn how seasonality, simplicity, and precision shape one of the world’s most respected culinary traditions. Classes are fully hands-on — kids cook complete dishes from start to finish while building confidence, knife skills, kitchen safety, rice and noodle fundamentals, flavor balancing, and teamwork. To deepen the experience, music from Japan plays throughout each session, and visual displays provide cultural context such as maps of Japan’s regions, traditional markets, bento culture, and historical references from ancient traditions through modern Tokyo. The kitchen becomes a classroom where food, history, geography, and creativity come together. This program emphasizes curiosity and confidence. Students are encouraged to explore flavors openly — discovering the balance of umami, sweetness, salt, and acidity that defines Japanese cuisine. Every class is designed so there’s something each child connects with, while gently expanding their palate and perspective. Program Structure Schedule: Thursdays, 3:30–6:30 PM Duration: Four consecutive weeks Age Group: 9–12 years Class Size: Limited to 12 students Curriculum Focus – Japan Japanese cuisine and regional influences How geography and seasonality shape food — from coastal seafood traditions to rice-based agriculture Core Japanese ingredients and transformations (rice into sushi and onigiri, soybeans into miso and soy sauce, dashi as a foundational stock) Cultural rituals around presentation, mindfulness, and respect in food preparation and dining Foundational cooking techniques presented in age-appropriate ways (rice cooking, knife skills, rolling, simmering, seasoning, and balance of umami) Please Note This is a progressive, four-week series and is designed to be taken as a full month. Youth Culinary Passport – Elevated American Classics is a four-week series designed for curious 9–12-year-olds who want to build real kitchen skills while discovering the roots and evolution of American food. Each week, students explore iconic American dishes as a gateway to understanding regional influences, cultural diversity, and the evolution of classic comfort foods. From Southern traditions to coastal California freshness, students learn how immigration, agriculture, and innovation have shaped what we now consider American cuisine. Classes are fully hands-on — kids cook complete dishes from start to finish while building confidence, knife skills, kitchen safety, foundational techniques, and teamwork. Throughout the series, students are introduced to the idea of taking familiar dishes and elevating them through technique, balance, and presentation. To deepen the experience, music from different American eras and regions plays throughout each session, and visual displays provide cultural context such as regional maps, historical food influences, and iconic American food moments. The kitchen becomes a classroom where food, culture, history, and creativity come together. This program emphasizes curiosity and confidence. Students are encouraged to explore familiar flavors in new ways — recognizing what they already love while discovering how small refinements can transform a dish. Every class is designed so there’s something each child connects with, while gently expanding their palate and understanding of food.
